The Key Challenges
In December 2002, Justlife Group was looking for retail solutions software to support their retail outlet business operations. The key criteria for the retail solutions are functionality and pricing. After going through the POS evaluation process, Justlife Group decided MYOB RetailManager was the one for their Justlife Shop outlet.

The Outcome
Justlife Group are currently using MYOB RetailManager in its three Justlife Shop outlets. Ms Rachael Tai, the IT Manager for Justlife Group Sdn Bhd said, “We found MYOB Retail Manager is the closest match in terms of functionality and pricing.” Being convinced of MYOB product range, Justlife Group went a step further by migrating their existing accounting software to MYOB Premier.

Mail Boxes Etc., Inc. (MBE), a UPS® company, is the world’s largest franchisor of retail shipping, postal and business service centers. Its franchise brands, The UPS Store® and Mail Boxes Etc.®, together comprise more than 5,800 independently owned locations around the world, providing convenient and value-added business services to the small-office/home-office (SOHO) market, corporate "road warriors," and consumers.

In Malaysia, the first MBE outlet was opened in 2002 and it has been growing progressively through the years. With 10 outlets to date and expansion plans already in place, MBE is set to scale mountains.

The Key Challenges
As technology plays a pivotal role in today’s business world, traditional methods have to be replaced by automated systems. Embracing this move, MBE replaced their all cash registers with MYOB software. Although there were many available options in the market, MBE was keen on MYOB as it is the only software that had the balance in terms of salient features and price. Fixed on the idea, they pursued further by investing in MYOB RetailManager, the program that ultimately gave Mailbox Etc® control over each aspect of their retail business.

Business Profile
A hobby and passion to share music with the locals was what started The Guitar Store (TGS) back in 1997. Mr. Kuah Wei Chin, Director of Sales and Operations, and his partner Mr. Low Kia Soon, Director, opened TGS together in Taman Segar Cheras, which now houses a retail store, warehouse and even training center for music lessons. Their vision and business offerings are simple – Sales, Service and Training. Their dream materialised into a one-stop provider for all musical needs where one can hone guitar skills or service that creaky violin or even buy drumsticks.

The Key Challenges
TGS started off their accounts by using a manual accounting system. After almost a year of operations they decided to computerize. Mr. Kuah said, “Using a manual system was clear and easy to trace. The stock was at first easy to handle but then it grew to over 1,000 items! Besides that, we wanted to be technologically forward so we computerized.” Mr. Kuah asked a computer dealer about accounting software for SMEs and was referred to MYOB.

The Outcome
As with adopting any new technology, there were several initial challenges. “I’m a musician, I had no clue how to use a PC and what Windows 95 was. I was also anxious about storing all that financial information in one place,” Mr. Kuah recounts.

Eventually the anxiety was replaced by satisfaction. “With MYOB Accounting, we became more efficient. We saved time entering invoices and purchase orders. We’re still busy but busy focusing other things,” stated Mr. Kuah.

Seven years and an outlet later, they are still using MYOB and would not even dream of getting another accounting software. All items that come into the warehouse and shop are entered religiously into MYOB. TGS uses the two different invoice layouts of Item and Service to process Sales meticulously. And the Card File has enabled them to keep in touch with their current and past customers easily through newsletters, promotions and vouchers, which are emailed on a regular basis. Mr. Kuah even keeps a copy of MYOB Accounting on his laptop so he can access key reports like Profit & Loss and Sales by Salesperson anytime.

Ms. Wong Yoke Sim, a MYOB Professional Partner (link to PP listing page), helped TGS get off the ground with their MYOB software usage. She helped with the installation and has serviced TGS over the years tweaking TGS’s usage of MYOB software. Ms. Wong assisted TGS in making the most out of MYOB software by adding a scanner that sped up stocktaking. “Ms. Wong is a nice and efficient consultant. Sometimes she does some extra work for us and doesn’t even charge us!” Mr. Kuah said.

Mr. Kuah also said that Ms. Wong also recommends TGS to sign up for Business Support or MYOB’s technical support plan annually. “You get a free upgrade for an affordable cost and local technical support from MYOB’s regional call center is only a phone call away,” stated Mr. Kuah. “We’ve grown over the years with MYOB. We don’t feel we’re successful yet but we’re getting there. And we know we can count on MYOB to always be there,” Mr. Kuah summed up.

Business Profile
TIVO Technologies provides software and networking services that contribute to the success of its clients. TIVO employs a broad range of development skills to successfully execute a variety of software projects for its clients.

The Key Challenges
Ms Elizabeth Hong, the executive handling accounts at TIVO used to do invoices and keep track of company expenses using Excel sheets when the company first started in 2004. As business grew, things got tougher and many weekends were spent keeping track of all the businesses account.

The Outcome
Those days are a distant memory, now that Elizabeth is using MYOB Premier. She loves the efficiency, the ease of updating, estimating, and billing. Business Manager Paul Ong was the first to discover MYOB for TIVO. When he received news in November 2006 that the government would be raising the Good and Services Tax (GST) rate by 1 July 2007, Paul decided that TIVO Technologies should register for GST and get reliable accounting software at the same time, to better manage the company’s accounts. His main requirements – software that was affordable, easy to use, scalable, and easily adaptable to regulatory changes. MYOB fit the bill.

With the help of Sandra, their MYOB Professional Partner (link to PP listing page), TIVO Technologies applied for SPRING Singapore’s GST Assistance Scheme which assists Singapore -based SMEs that voluntarily register for GST with a grant to cover the costs of getting new accounting software. With training by MYOB, using the software and adapting to the GST increase was easy, as it only takes a few clicks to update the new GST rate. MYOB Premier helps TIVO staff and their external accountant save time as they no longer have to spend days to generate reports and look for the data they need. Miss Tan, their accountant, said all she needs is to download the information from the software, and keep track of the business accounts off-site.

With all business information easily accessible through MYOB, Paul can retrieve the business intelligence he needs in a matter of minutes. With this, he can plan his resources more efficiently and react to changes in the market quickly. Unlike using spreadsheets, the functions are better and do not require complicated macros to generate information.
